Riverside

The purpose of the Frederick Law Olmsted Society “is to preserve the heritage of the Village and the uniqueness of its landscape.” The Riverside Public Library has over 600 books relating to Frederick Law Olmsted and landscape design. Frank Lloyd Wright was so taken with the Village of Riverside and its pastoral environment that he designed two homes, the F.F. Tomek House, built in 1905 and the first in the Prairie School Style of Architecture, and the Avery Coonley Residence, built in 1908. Wright called the Coonley Residence “The most successful of my houses from my standpoint.” Both of these homes are on the National Register of Historic Places. There are 56 other structures in the Village designated as local landmarks. The Riverside Historical Commission oversees the Riverside Historical Museum. The museum, housed in the old Water Tower Pump House, contains documents, artifacts, maps, manuscripts, drawings, records, photographs and books about Riverside, Frederick Law Olmsted, and the architects who made the Village the unique place it is today.
